Speech at the NIT Opening Ceremony
作者:
                                   Dr. Yenming Zhang, Professor

往事如烟,曾有一段我至今流连;

Honorable Educational Consulor, Ms. Katherine Campbell, Australian Embassy in China; First Secretary, Commercial Division, Australian Embassy in China; Honorary President of NIT, Mr. Wan Bo’ao;
Ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning to you all!
It is my honor and great pleasure to present and project the image of National Institute of Technology to the Louzizhuang community, Beijing, China, and to our strategic allies in Australia and other countries.

After China-Australia College Zhengzhou (CACZ), invested by Australian Education Development Group (AEDG in short), NIT is another registered educational entity in Beijing, at tertiary level, that stands up quickly, building up her capacity and orienting all endeavors for the readiness of operation. That is why on this very day of September 18, 2002, the Board of NIT, the Academic Advisors Committee (AAC), faculty, staff and students want to share our rejoicing and euphoric feelings with all the people and organizations who have been supporting us.

NIT aims at creating and developing an environment conducive for learning and nurturing. You have seen the campus and facilities, finding them beautiful, quiet, well prepared and up to date. Such characteristics of tranquility and quality are what we provide, and our professional passion lies on what we produce.

The faculty at NIT, local and expatriate, strives for excellence in teaching. The first batch of students are taking advantages of unconventional learning vehicles inside and outside class.
I was touched by the ways our students expressed their feelings towards our faculty on the Teachers’ Day (which was 8 days ago). My determination was also reinforced by governmental officials’ positive comments when they inspected the classroom teaching and learning activities last week.

On the Orientation Day, I shared with the students that teaching at NIT would be student-centered. Our faculty will not only transmit knowledge and skills to the students, but also facilitate their learning.

At Harvard University, leaders’ full attention is paid on “who to teach, whom to teach, what to teach, and how to teach”. Following this guiding principle, we consciously design and implement our English courses, degree programs, and institutional activities for students’ academic progress and for staff/faculty’s professional development.

NIT trains students to be leaders, possessing such characters as forward-looking, visionary, decisive, supportive, understanding, competent, and confident. NIT prepares human and intellectual sources and resources for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Hence, dear students, whatever you do, wherever you go, keep in mind that your great expectations and ours meet. Let’s make concerted efforts towards the actualization of our mottos and the realization of our shared goals!

NIT is our home. Upon returning from every trip, by train or by plane, I feel so good when the campus is getting closer and closer. Every time back to Beijing, when the plane noses down, I look through the window, beyond the clouds, searching for the green campus, white buildings, and blue lakes. I brighten up when seeing them. Please note that I mean returning trips from errands, not from work abroad. Some students ask about me, “Is the president staying at NIT, or going back abroad?” –I would say, this is where I work, and stay.

I am grateful to all the people around, to the Embassy of Australia, the Educational Commission of Beijing, the Educational Commission of Chaoyang District, the government of Louzizhuang Xiang, and to other institutions in China & Australia—Ms. Julie Boyd, representative of the Multiversity and the University of Ballarat, Mr. Shane Brady from Cabra Dominican College, representatives from Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, Alexander Educational Group, for their continuous support. Students, please join me to express our gratitude to them.

In his poem The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost wrote:
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

All students-- let’s read the verse again all together.

Deep in the woods here, we are taking initiative to pave the way for students to take a road, unconventional and innovative, leading to the world, and to your desired future. On the front wall, you can see, Hands-on Skill, Humanities, Knowledge, and Co-existence. I am heartened whenever reading this motto, and take you as our pride. In the future, when looking back, you will that remember NIT once helped you make a difference in your lives, and will take NIT as your pride.

On behalf of Mr. Wan Bo’ao, Honorary President of NIT; Mr. James Tan, Vice Chairman of AEDG; Ms. Lydia Liu, Chairman of NIT Board; Dr. Chen Wen, Vice President of NIT and senior lawyer; Dr. John Chen, Chairman of the NIT Academic Advisors Committee; and Professor John Maher, Director of AAC, I thank you!

President NIT
