FRIENDS OF WA DINNER

BEIJING

Grand Hyatt Hotel

Wednesday 22 April 2009, 6.30pm

SPEECH

Introduction

Acknowledgements

Ladies and Gentlemen

Thank you for your kind welcome

I am very pleased to be visiting China again. I am delighted to be with you at tonight’s Friends of WA dinner and I am pleased that such a broad range of participants have been able to attend

A warm welcome to you all and particularly to our alumni and Agents - where would we be without you.

BEIJING

It is a great pleasure to be in Beijing and to have this opportunity to talk to you about Western Australia and about the quality of our universities and the student experience in Perth.

Western Australia is a growing destination for students and tourists from Beijing.

As many of you will be aware, Western Australia has many linkages in Beijing. Thank Beijing government and Chaoyang local government. My delegation has met with the Chinese Academy of Engineers and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and will be meeting with the Minister for Education, Hanban and the China Scholarship Council. Tomorrow we will visit NIT School as well. This school has offered the WACE program for 5 years.

The Western Australian Delegation

As Minister for Education and Tourism in Western Australia, I am leading an education delegation to China with the Vice Chancellors of the four public universities.

The overall objective of the delegation is to:

  • Strengthen important government  relationships in China
  • Promote  two-way research collaboration and linkages between China and Western Australian Universities, and to
  •  Raise the profile of Perth as a city with high quality universities and as an exciting destination for tourists and for students.

Western Australia in perspective

Western Australia is a very rich State and is at the heart of Australia’s vast mineral and petroleum resources industry.

Western Australia is Australia’s largest State and represents 33% of Australia’s land mass and 26% of China’s land mass.

Perth is a relatively small city in Chinese terms with a population of 1.6 million people in comparison with Beijing with 12 million. But then Beijing is a world city and most cities are small by comparison.

With a small population, Perth is a friendly and relaxed city and Western Australia with its many frontiers and outdoor opportunities is an exciting tourist destination.

Perth as a liveable city

Perth is a vibrant city with a unique Australian lifestyle.

Perth was voted the fourth most liveable city in the world in 2008 (Economist magazine).

Such a ranking reflects Perth’s wonderful climate, its healthy outdoor lifestyle, its clean and safe environment, its transport system, city structures, cultural and social activities.

As State Minister for Education and Tourism, and as a Western Australian, my professional and personal interests combine in promoting Perth as a very liveable city and an exciting tourist and education destination.

Perth as a study and research destination

Perth has developed a world class university system.

Our excellent universities are established under State legislation and strongly supported and promoted by the Government.

The universities are seen by Government as key institutions and central to the State’s economic and social objectives.

The five universities in Western Australia offer comprehensive learning programs for undergraduates and graduates across all broad fields of study.

Western Australia has much to offer with its mineral wealth, agriculture and tourism potential.

However, it also has a strong focus on pure and applied research and significant successes with internationally recognised research staff such as Professors Barry Marshall and Robin Warren at the University of Western Australia who won the 2005 Nobel Prize for Medicine.

The Western Australia Government has a strong commitment to research and development and supports cooperative developments between Government, the universities and industry and promotes international linkages.

ChinaWestern Australia relationships

The relationship between Western Australia and China is built on rapidly expanding people-to-people ties.

There are growing numbers of our tourists visiting both countries.

Perth has a diverse student population representative of many nationalities with strongly growing numbers of Chinese students researching and studying in our universities.

A Chinese student choosing to study in Western Australian universities will find a rich and supportive educational and social environment.

Of longer term importance is the development of linkages and understanding between our countries associated with the movement of students.

International students researching and studying in Western Australia have opened our universities and our community to the world.

Conclusion

Western Australia looks forward to welcoming tourists and providing students with an excellent and stimulating study and social environment.

We also aim to forge new and stronger research associations with China and Chinese universities.

Thank you for your interest and I hope to have the chance to speak to many of you personally during the evening.
