REVISED SPEECH

Good afternoon, distinguished guests, teachers and friends. I’m Isabella and from the National Institute of Technology’s Year 11 Class 4. Firstlyplease allow me to welcome you heartily to our school, and I wish to greet you with more than mere words. I wish each of you to take this welcome as a heartfelt greeting from friend to friend.

About 12 years ago, I learned about a huge rock which can change its colour from dawn to dusk in the National Geographic magazine, called Ayer’s Rock.

Three years after that, I watched a splendid Olympic opening ceremony, which left me a great impression of a harbour city called Sydney;

Last Year, I knew there is a beautiful lake called Swan River in Perth.

Then, unfortunately, in February of this year, a devastating bush fire struck that beautiful land. Amazingly, the brave heart of the whole nation has not been destroyed and the 21 million people became united and carried on.

In fact, these statements are all about a continent which is approximately 2,500 miles away, a country called Australia. Apart from the well-known movie stars like Mel Gibson or Nichole Kidman, Chinese people know a lot more about Australia.

In December 1972, Australia was one of the first western nations to establish diplomatic relations with China and in ensuing 37 years the two nations have become strong trading and intercultural partners, especially Western Australia.

As for me, an ordinary student in year 11, I benefit most from the cooperation of education. I came here just two months ago, pursuing my dream of being a politician that can make a significant contribution to my country and the world. When I had my first interview with Principle Lydia Liu, she informed me of the importance of exploration in academic study in NIT. Besides this, the various school activities and the Australian educational environment appeal to me so much that sometimes I am unsure whether I am not already in Australia. And today, I promise that I will devote myself to the endless adventure of learning.

When Kevin Rudd first visited China as Prime Minister and gave a speech in fluent Mandarin, he said:”海内存知己,天涯若比邻”, which is a famous line from an ancient poem from the Tang Dynasty. It means “If we could enter into our hearts sincerely, no matter how far we are from each other, we will just be nearby.” As for me, I will cherish every moment of studying here, and if by any chance I have the opportunity to receive future education in WA and other states in Australia, I would hope to deepen the communication between people of my generation.

And finally, just like the song says:

We are one world, but we are many peoples, and from all the lands on earth we come, we have one dream and speak one voice------- we, will be together, to make the world a better place to live.

Thank you.
